FAQ - Restricted Traffic Zone (RTZ) and sticker application

ATTENTION: Stickers are mandatory only for June 6th in the following instances:
    • If you must enter the RTZ on June 6th.
    • If you reside within the RTZ and intend to travel on June 6th, 2024.
If either of these scenarios apply, you will need a vehicle sticker.

If you are already in the RTZ on June 6th and you intend to permanently exit, a sticker is not required. Exiting the zone is unrestricted.

To prioritise proximity and efficiency, stickers are issued at town halls located within the RTZ, available for both permanent and temporary residents and professionals upon submission of:
    • the vehicle(s) registration document;
    • Proof of residency or alternative documentation  (rental agreement, hotel invoice, etc.);
    • request form (available to download);
    • a valid identity document.

Request forms :

From the end of April, 2024, you will be entitled to contact the communes or the Calvados prefecture (dday80@calvados.gouv.fr).

Stickers should be placed on vehicle wind shields to facilitate the flow of traffic for those travelling within the RTZ. On June 6, only vehicles with a sticker will be allowed to enter the RTZ.

    • RTZ residents (primary and secondary residences);
    • Guests of hotels, B&Bs or campsites located in the RTZ;
    • Those involved in day-to-day economic and social life who will be circulating the RTZ on June 06, 2024. This includes taxis, personal or public services, coach operators, company vehicles, etc.

Stickers are issued at the town hall by the relevant commune for permanent or temporary residents and professionals (within the RTZ) by showing:
    • Vehicle registration document;
    • Proof of address or any other proof of residence (contract for a vacation rental, hotel bill, etc.)
    • Proof of identity.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION
Permanent and temporary residents of the RTZ and professionals working in the RTZ should contact the town halls of the relevant communes.
When you come to the town hall, it is up to you to provide a hard copy of your supporting documents.
If the documents are complete, the sticker will be issued at that time.

The request must be sent either:
    • By e-mail: dday80@calvados.gouv.fr (specifying in the subject line: “Demande de stickage”);
    • By post: Préfecture du Calvados - Cellule de Réponse au Public - 80ème (CRP-80ème), rue Daniel Huet - 14038 - Caen (please provide a stamped envelope for the reply).

Supporting documents required for stickers:
    • Request form (to be downloaded on www.calvados.gouv.fr), completed and sent to the prefecture.
    • Copy of the vehicle registration document;
    • Copy of a document proving the motive of entering the zone;
    • Copy of an identity document;
    • A stamped envelope if you can’t collect the sticker at the prefecture.

Method of delivery:
    • By post: provide a stamped reply envelope;
    • At the prefecture reception desk, after being contacted by our services.

Please note: all requests sent by post are only possible in France.

If you can’t go directly to a town hall or the prefecture during this period, we recommend that you contact your accommodation provider, who can take care of the sticker delivery for you.

Your request for a sticker should be submitted to the Calvados Prefecture.
The request must be addressed either:
    • by email: dday80@calvados.gouv.fr (specifying in the subject line: “Demande de sticker”);
    • by post: Préfecture du Calvados – Cellule de Réponse au Public – 80ème (CRP-80ème), rue Daniel Huet – 14038 – Caen (provide a stamped envelope for response – only French stamps are accepted).

A sticker application must be submitted to your respective municipal office.

Exiting via the closed route is permissible, followed by prompt redirection to secondary routes. ATTENTION: You may not be allowed to exit or return home during procession passages. Additionally, parking on public roads will not be permitted.

Arrival before June 6th is strongly recommended.

    • Arrival before June 6th without intent to travel in the RTZ on that day exempts the need for a sticker.
    • If you arrive on June 6th, entry into the RTZ will be permitted once you present identification and a document justifying the need for entry into the zone at “juste à temps” entry points. To minimise disruptions, it is recommended to avoid travel to the RTZ on June 6th.
    • Advance coordination with accommodation providers is advised for sticker acquisition to facilitate RTZ access on the scheduled day (thus ensuring that the sticker is already visibly affixed to the vehicle upon arrival).
Advance arrangements should be made with your accommodation provider (hotel, campground, vacation rental, etc.) or hosting individual/organisation to obtain a sticker from a RTZ municipality on your behalf.

ATTENTION: Stickers may be issued at checkpoints under exceptional and urgent circumstances. In all other cases, sticker requests should be submitted.

The prefecture can issue a very limited supply of stickers for exceptional circumstances (health emergencies, family crises, persons with reduced mobility, etc.). Submit your request along with identification, vehicle registration copy, proof of residency, request form and documentation showing the purpose of your entry to dday80@calvados.gouv.fr; if by post please provide a stamped envelope for response return.

Contacting the municipality in the RTZ or the Calvados Prefecture. Provide documentation showing the purpose of your entry along with vehicle registration, valid identification, and a request form.

Sticker request should be made to a RTZ municipality or the Calvados Prefecture. However, given the traffic conditions on June 6th, alternative routes are recommended where feasible.

ATTENTION: Due to events and traffic conditions, deferring your travel or using alternative routes is strongly advised.

Event invitations will specify access conditions with more information available on the website of the Calvados Prefecture.

For municipal ceremonies, contact the organising municipalities for recommended routes.

When a family member is compelled to travel to a specified location, such as a workplace or medical appointment, and multiple vehicles are necessary, a justification with the request form attesting to the necessity is required.
For detailed information on sticker application procedures, please refer to the question "Regarding highly exceptional and justified requests".
